Thattekkad literally means flat forest, and the region is a deciduous but generally moist low-land forest surrounding the Periyar River, the longest river in Kerala.
A birding haven, the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary in Ernakulam is the first bird sanctuary of Kerala and is home to innumerable species of birds. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded here and is the ideal place for birders and nature enthusiasts. It was Dr. Salim Ali, the Birdman of India and world-renowned ornithologist who recognised the unique avian life in Thattekkad. Established in 1983 and spread over 25 sq kilometers, the sanctuary is also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.

nearby tourist destination Thattekkad Bird sanctuary.
